Retama Village

A place to stay in the Winter

In January 2006, a mere 7 months after we "hit the road," we received a message from Bill Bevington, one of our "Heavy Duty Truck" friends.  He and Kathy, his wife, had discovered a new, upscale RV complex, Retama Village, in Mission, TX, and had bought a 40’ x 80’ lot, complete with a concrete slab and a 240 square foot coach house, surrounded by native Texas landscaping.  He wanted to let us and all others in our group know about this fantastic investment opportunity.  Investment opportunity…hmmmm, we were immediately not interested.  We had just gotten rid of our real estate and all of our stuff and were not ready to make any kind of investment.  It was just too soon.  We had only begun our travels and did not want to get tied up with another real estate obligation.  And so we dismissed the idea and thought no more about it until September!

Our good friends, Mike and Pat McFall, own a piece of property in Custer, SD in the beautiful Black Hills.   They extended us an invitation to come and visit, and stay as long as we wanted.  They even gave us more than enough electricity and water.  The day after we arrived in early September 2007, Larry and Linda Moore arrived, and the three rigs sat perched on top of the McFall’s hill.  Just an outstanding view!   We stayed until it was time to head on down to Wichita for the Annual Heavy Duty Truck Rally in late September.   Now, both the McFalls and the Moores had purchased lots in Retama Village and they planned to head on down to Mission after the Rally.  Naturally, much of the conversation centered on the community and how they planned to finish out their coach houses.  Then we found out that in addition to the McFalls and the Moores, other friends, the Mayers, the Czetlis, and the Shelleys, had bought lots as well!  We value the opinions of all these folks.   So, sometime during those three weeks, we turned from "not interested" to "maybe we ought to buy a lot!"   I must confess, that  I, not Mark, was the driving force in coming to this decision.  This time, I will take all the credit, and, of course, all the blame!

We contacted Bill, who now was the sales leader for this project, expressed our interest, and asked for some information.  Once the ball got rolling, it did not stop until we found ourselves owning a lot as well, sight unseen!  We sent in our deposit while still in Wichita.  I guess that if we did not like what we saw, once we got down there, we could have pulled out of the deal.  But, given that our good friends were sold on their purchases, that did not seem likely.
